Camp-Out & Hike-Out 2004
JULY 27, 28 and 29 2004
Camp-out/Hike-out Report

The Club’s Camp-Out-Hike-Out took place July 27 thru July 30 at Porpoise Bay Provincial Park, Sechelt Inlet, British Columbia. 22 camper/hikers enjoyed excellent weather, good hiking and kayaking. The trails on the Sunshine Coast are well maintained. The views from the tops of the mountains and along the coast trails were spectacular. The highlight for many of the hikers was the trail to the Skookumchuck Narrows saltwater tidal rapids that connect the Sechelt and Jervis Inlets. Watching as the tide is forced through the narrows at ebb or flood periods. The waves created cavernous whirlpools. At the high the current was almost 16 knots per hour.

Of course, everyone stopped at the wonderful bakery on the trail to load up on “bear claws”, homemade bread, pies and delicious coffee. Other great hikes were to Pender Hill, Mount Daniel, Smuggler Cove and Cliff Gilker.

Camp activities included lots of funny stories, big camp fires every night, s’mores, ice cream night, and a spice-nut cake made over the fire. The group camp area had hot showers, flush toilets and potable water. Everyone brought food and snacks. We all plan to return to this area again. --- Larry
