Mt Baker Club
Members Record the King Tides – Dec 28th
2011
Despite the lateness of the notice and
the earliness of the meeting time (dark

mornings) a small but enthusiastic
group of our club members coalesced at
Marine Park to view and record for the
Washington Dept of Ecology the shoreline
appearance during the King Tides of
December 2011. This information is
important in predicting the effects of
rising sea levels and is sometimes
dramatic to witness. Our group found
placid waters, not very exciting but
exactly what is desired by the Dept of
Ecology. Notably among those
attending was exceptionally longtime
member Earl Cilley a wonderful source of
information about our Club History and
Dave Tucker our famous and very active
local geologist. Afterward the group
split up, some continuing to monitor other
sites along the shore (waves lapping at
paved trails and building foundations,
concrete steps awash, trees falling into
the water); others to enjoy hot coffee
from the Amtrak espresso shop or the one
at Boulevard Park.
There were a couple of interesting
non-tidal observations. I was “trapped”
not once but twice by passing
trains. Later the posted photo
records indicated that there were other
local observers checking the same
locations but going north, while I was
going south. We probably passed each
other at some point.
Humorous, but also provides better data
due to multiple observation times and
viewpoints. Next local King Tide
viewing opportunity is January 13th,
2012.
